Intensive Programs

Critical Language Scholarship (CLS)

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is funded by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is administered by American Councils. The goal of the CLS program is to use group-based intensive language instruction and situated learning model for improving language performance to certain levels and enrich cultural experiences to consolidate learning outcome. To address the importance of diversity in learning, Applicants with diverse interests, including various fields of study and different career paths are selected to meet the purpose of representing the full diversity of the United States.National Cheng Kung University is the only hosting site in Taiwan since 2016, approximately 115 U.S. undergraduate and graduate students were selected. CLS participants spent eight weeks in Taiwan to enhance their Chinese ability.

Taiwan Intensive Summer Language Program (TISLP)

Based on the agreement of the Memorandum of Execution between Taiwan’s ministry of education and American Councils for International Education (ACIE), the collaboration between Taiwan and ACIE promotes learning Chinese and culture in Taiwan to the new generation of America. National Cheng Kung University designed and hosted Taiwan Intensive Summer Language Program (TISLP) since 2016, approximately 100 U.S. undergraduate and graduate students were selected. Participants enable strengthen their language skills through activities and excursions in the program and an immersion environment. All participants in TISLP are able to improve their Chinese to one level up in an 8-week study. In 2019, TISLP was approved as a program for Chinese Flagship Program students to apply.

Taiwan-United States Sister Relations Alliance (TUSA) Global Ambassador Scholarship Program

The Taiwan-United States Sister Relations Alliance (TUSA) is a non-government, non-profit nationwide organization established by Professor Yun-Chi Yeh and his cofounders, registered with the Secretary of State of Arkansas, United States of America. The purpose of TUSA is to “Promote peace in the world by creating closer friendships and understanding between the people of the United States and the people of Taiwan” through cultural exchange programs, educational partnerships, and economic cooperation.
Since hosting the TUSA Program at the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in Tainan City from 2012, TUSA Scholarship recipients have accumulated 386 students in 42 states and 2 administrative districts of the United State. The goal of the TUSA program is to improve Chinese language proficiency, appreciate global issues, and increase intercultural connections between Taiwan and the United States.
