Government-allocated scholarships

Huayu Enrichment Scholarship: Eligible to foreign students who study Chinese, this scholarship provides a stipend of NT$25,000 per month.please consult relevant section at M.O.E’s website: http://english.moe.gov.tw/mp.asp?mp=1

Guidelines for the General Scholarship:

  1. Scholarship amounts: based on the budget provided; basically, each recipient will receive NT$6,000 per month.
  2. Scholarship period: The scholarship period is 6 months. The maximum number of scholarships that one student can be awarded in their life is two. After two successful applications, students are no longer eligible to apply.
  3. Scholarship quotas:
    • The numbers of scholarship grants to be awarded will be based on the budget provided by Ministry of Education of Taiwan. The numbers of scholarships are divided proportionately amongst the four Chinese levels, beginner, basic, intermediate, and advanced (levels decided and classified by this Chinese Language Center), in relation to the numbers of students in the small group classes at each level. In addition to the regular scholarship quotas, we place 4 candidates on a waiting list in case a scholarship already awarded is nullified or revoked.
    • There is a limit to the number of scholarships that can be awarded to any one nationality.
  4. Scholarship eligibility requirements:
    • Must be foreigners.
    • Must have studied at the Center for at least three months, during which time applicants must have taken Chinese courses for at least 15 hours per week. In addition, applicants must have got grades averaging 85 percent or above for this semester, and intend to continue studying at the Center for another six months.
    • Must have demonstrated a conscientious approach to study, appropriate behavior, obeyed school regulations and been respectful toward teachers.
    • Must have an excellent attendance record in which they have been absent for less than 15 hours in current semester.
    • Students who have received the special scholarship from Ministry of Education or a scholarship from another ROC government agency may not apply for this scholarship.
  5. Documents required for application:
    • Application form for General Scholarship
    • Recommendation letter(s) (for individual class students; one recommendation letter for small group students) from applicant's Chinese teachers.
    • Study plan.
    • Two compositions on topics of your choice (original written works are required).
  6. Detailed information:
    • Applicants must submit all of the required documents by the application deadline. Late applications will not be accepted.
    • There are four levels of assessment in relation to level (Beginner, Basic, Intermediate and Advanced). There is a different examination paper for each level. The examination consists of a writing test (60%) and an oral test (40%).
  7. Assessment is weighted as follows:
    • Class work (40%): Includes periodic tests, homework results, attendance, TOP, and teacher's overall impression.
    • Composition (10%).
    • The examination for the scholarship (50%).
  8. Conditions under which scholarships may be stopped for one month: Student is absent for more than 15 hours in one month during the scholarship period (except where there are circumstances beyond a student's control or a serious emergency has arisen for which the student has documented proof of occurrence.)
  9. Conditions under which scholarships may be revoked:
    • Student is absent for more than one sixth of a semester.
    • Students’ termly grade average is below 85 percent.
    • Student's behavior during class is unacceptable or inappropriate.
    • Student leaves the country without prior consent from the language center.
  10. Further information about scholarships is announced publicly from time to time by the Ministry of Education. Guidelines for Golden Scholarship

(for Summer Session):

  1. Scholarship amounts: based on the budget provided.
  2. Scholarship period: The scholarship period is 2 months (July & August of each year). The maximum number of scholarships that one student can be awarded in their life is one. After one successful application, students are no longer eligible to apply.
  3. Scholarship quotas:
    • The numbers of scholarship grants to be awarded will be 2. In addition to the regular scholarship quotas, we place 1 candidate on a waiting list in case a scholarship already awarded is nullified or revoked.
  4. Scholarship eligibility requirements:
    • Must be foreigners.
    • Must be new applicants.
    • Must have recommendation from professors/Chinese teachers of overseas universities and colleges which applicants are attending or have attended.
    • Students who have received the special scholarship from Ministry of Education or a scholarship from another ROC government agency may not apply for this scholarship.
  5. Documents required for application:
    • Application form for Chinese courses.
    • Two recommendation letters from applicants’ professors/Chinese teachers of overseas universities and colleges which applicants are attending or have attended.
    • Transcript of latest semester from the universities and college which applicants are attending or have attended.
    • Study plan of 1,000 words or less, stating intended Summer Session.
  6. Detailed information:
    • Applicants must submit all of the required documents by the application deadline. Late applications will not be accepted.
  7. Assessment is weighted as follows:
    • The Center will hold administrative meeting in order to evaluate applications and to select recipients.
  8. Conditions under which scholarships may be stopped for one month: Student is absent for more than 15 hours in one month during the scholarship period (except where there are circumstances beyond a student's control or a serious emergency has arisen for which the student has documented proof of occurrence.)
  9. Conditions under which scholarships may be revoked:
    • Student is absent for more than one sixth of a semester.
    • Students’ termly grade average is below 85 percent.
    • Student's behavior during class is unacceptable or inappropriate.
    • Student leaves the country without prior consent from the language center.
